Recreation Practitioner

About the Region

The Region is comprised of the Rural Municipality of Ituna Bon Accord #246 and the Town of Ituna nestled in the middle.  The region is surrounded by rich farmland and farms. The Region works collaboratively on recreation sharing responsibility for our regional park which has a 9-hole golf course, disc golf, a Blue Jays ball diamond, camping and an outdoor swimming pool.  The Town has a curling rink, a newly rebuilt arena and a resurfaced pickleball court.  The region also has a local Health Care Centre that is part of the Sunrise Health Region.

Position Overview

The position reports to the Town of Ituna Administrator and supports the local recreation and leisure stakeholders working collaboratively to enhance leisure services and opportunities. The Recreation Practitioner will provide strategic leadership in planning, budgeting and grant writing, facilities management, and program development, that enhance community vitality and well-being of the region.  The hours are 37.5 hours per week, the Recreation Practitioner hours flex to the demands of the season, programming, and the role and includes some evening and weekend work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Using the Framework for Recreation in Canada with a focus on the five areas of goals and priorities to create a strategic plan with at least 3 actionable goals to achieve during first year
  • Work with stakeholders and recreation groups to achieve these goals and work to improve recreation opportunities in the community.
  • Provide support to current and new local events and activities that encourage active living
  • Provide management for local facilities as designated
  • Grant writing for the region and specific stakeholders.
  • Expand the capacity for active living through strategic partnerships and skills training for residents.

Education and Experience

Preference given to individuals with related post-secondary diploma or degree or with a solid knowledge of sports, recreation or community development.

Qualifications

  • Ability to think strategically and translate goals into operational objectives
  • Computer skills in basic programs like Microsoft word, excel and outlook
  • Experience in program development
  • Can demonstrate leadership skills
  • Organized and detail orientated
  • Experience working with volunteers
  • Ability to budget and manage money efficiently
  • Strong writing and communication skills

Salary and Benefits

The salary for the first year is $50,000 with benefits and vacation.  Employees are paid on the 15th and 30th of each month. The first year will influence the earning potential and consideration to continue the role in subsequent years.
